A Facebook Business Page Tip

I completely meant to share this post LAST Thursday until I was hit with an epic case of the flu. In fact I'm still recovering... a lesson in learning how to slow down I guess!! So while I'm in bed resting off the chills, I wanted to share with you the post that has been sitting in my que since last week!!

I'm doing something a little different, sharing a video tip on how to better use Facebook. If you're ever wondering why there are things on your news feed that you're just not seeing, well it's because Facebook has made it increasingly more difficult to receive and share content. Not surprising since the amount of content being shared on Facebook is astronomical. So then, how do you get the content you want to share, seen by the people you want to see it? Today I'm sharing a quick tip on how to increase your scope as a business owner and how as a reader, you can ensure you see the content you want. Watch the video below to learn more!

And for those of you who would like a more in depth article on this exact thing, my friend and fellow photographer, Katelyn, wrote a great post on this several months back which explains in depth how to go about sharing this idea with your readership base. I hope this information has helped! If you're a DZP on Facebook, be sure to "get notifications" under the Liked button on the Deborah Zoe Photography page to stay up to date on all that is happening!! Happy Thursday friends, here's to a flu free winter I guess!!Increase Your Content Reach on Facebook by Deborah Zoe Photography

A Downtown Boston Engagement Session

boston city engagement session deborah zoe photography _0027.JPG

Chris and Hannah were adorably nervous at the start of their session, popping a bottle of bubbly to sip and enjoy while being photographed. But what did they have to be nervous about?! As you'll see, these two are naturals in front of the camera. Add in their over the top cute pup, Phoebe, and well you have one of my favorite session of the season!!

We started at their quaint apartment with Phoebe quickly stealing the show. After an outfit change we headed to the beautiful Kelleher Rose Garden with our final stop in the Fort Point District using the city skyline as an epic backdrop for pictures. Engagement sessions are so fun for me, I love having the opportunity to hang out with couples and photograph their every day love. The love that will take then through every season of their life together, the love that will grow them, mature them and change them. It's a privilege to be given a glimpse into the lives of my client's in this way and I'm so incredibly grateful for it!

Chris and Hannah were just a delight and are two of the sweetest people I know. They are a team and the best of friends, the perfect pair. I know I've said it before, but it is wonderful to watch two people who respect, cherish and LIKE each other, BE together. It inspires me to love my hubby just a little bit more. Well done you two!!

Product Highlight | Signature Album

madera books deborah zoe photography _ 0001.JPG

It's that time of year where my office sees many albums come and go:) The summer months have passed, clients have finalized their designs and albums are making their way to their permanent homes. Its really fun to receive an album for inspection here at the office. It's a treat to relive these special days and to see how each couple's story has been preserved in an album. What an amazing process to be a part of, to watch as images move from just images in a gallery to a carefully and artistically curated album that will be shared for years to come!

You know by now that I'm incredibly passionate about preserving the images of my clients in albums, so being able to share that with you is just lovely! My blog is a great resource, especially for those planning their albums. I love that I have a platform to be able to share with you real client albums, to give you a feel for just how beautiful these heirlooms are. I was recently asked by a new client, what makes these albums so special? What sets them apart? Of course there's the archival quality and sleek design. But really, what it comes down to, is a passion for preserving images in a beautifully bound, hand crafted album. You can't say that about every album company, and that's why I choose to work with the best:)!

A Fall Foliage Engagement Session

deborah zoe photography new england fall foliage engagement session0038 .JPG

When Meredith first contacted me about her engagement session with RJ she threw around a few ideas of what would make the perfect session for them. I'm a huge fan of incorporating personal elements into a couple's session so when she mentioned that they have a puppy I just KNEW that Paisley had to be a part!! I think it took a little convincing on Meredith's end, but let me tell you...Paisley was a star, she fit perfectly into the session! This fiesty pup plays such a huge part in RJ and Meredith's life so of course she had to be included!

I met Mere and RJ at the Groton Town Forest where they spend much of their free time. They love being outdoors, playing with their puppy and stealing away precious moments together. These two are a very busy couple with school, business and life, so any chance they can get away together is a lovely and dear gift. This is where they escape, and I loved that we were able to include a place so special to them, into their session.

It was scheduled to rain and though it was quite drizzly we managed to sneak everything into before the skies really opened up! Meredith and RJ are just the sweetest, two beautiful souls who love others and love each other dearly. They were nervous to have their picture taken, but as you'll see below they couldn't have been more natural in front of the camera! I cannot wait to celebrate with them come June!

Meredith and RJ thank you so much for your warmth, kindness (and bringing Paisley tag along!) I had a blast hanging out with you and I cannot wait for your wedding next year!! Enjoy your images, you guys are adorable!!

Working Through Mommy Guilt

The Art of Balance Dealing With Mommy Guilt.jpg

Working Through Mommy Guilt

I'm taking a step out with a very personal post today. I'm chatting about Mommy Guilt. If you're a Mom then you know exactly what I am talking about. If you're not, well then let me explain. As a Mom (whether you are a business woman, stay at home, work from home, have a side business, work for the "man", travel a lot etc etc) then you can often feel the pang of what I refer to as Mommy guilt. A guilt brought on by the idea that you are simply not good enough. You're not doing the best you can at being a Mom. And as ridiculous as it sounds, Mommy guilt can be paralyzing, debilitating, depressing and just all around awful.

We want the best for our kids, all parents do. When we can't live up to the very high expectations that we (and Pinterest) set for ourselves then, well we are most often prone to Mommy Guilt. For me that comes in the form of sitting in my office. I become acutely aware of the fact that someone else is taking care of my child while I answer emails, edit pictures and do my every day office work. And though I know I'm called to and passionate about the work that I'm doing, there's a sneaky and manipulative voice that creeps through and whispers, "You are not good enough."

This kind of topic, not specifically related to Mommy guilt but connected, came up while I was giving my Art of Balance talk at the Boston PUG a few weeks ago, in the question of how do you do it all? The simple answer is, I don't. I have a lot of help. I can't do it all and if I tried I would fail. I would be plagued with epic bouts of Mommy guilt, and I don't know if I would even be able to come up for air. The only way that I can balance being a Mommy to my favorite little man while running a business that I love is through hard decisions and a whole lot of help.

I only take on a select amount of weddings a year, I only work with people who I love and who respect what I do. I'm selective in the hours that I work a day and the kind of boundaries I establish between my business and my personal life. It's the only way I know how to be a Mom and a business owner. It's the only way I know how to serve my family and my clients well.

But despite all that I do to manage life, well, life happens. Things don't always go to plan and that pang of Mommy guilt can creep back in. I don't write this to garner any pity. More of a hope that there are other Mom's out there who feel the same way. (I know there are!) My hope is that I can encourage you with this. You are enough. Your are taking the best care of your child. Your child is loved. Establish your boundaries, your routines, your daily life, so that it reflects what matters most to you. And if you ever feel that pang of Mommy Guilt creeping in, know that there is an army of Mommies who stand behind you and support you.

Well at least THIS Mommy does. We're in this together. Down with the Mommy Guilt! Here's to building businesses that truly reflect what matters most and to all the Moms (and Dads) out there doing the hardest and BEST job of all.

A Marblehead Engagement Session

marblehead engagement session deborah zoe photography _0031.JPG

A Downtown Marblehead Engagement Session

I'm not sure why but Marblehead seems to be a hot spot lately for engagement sessions! Actually, that's a lie. I DO understand why! The picturesque backdrops, the ocean, the cottages, it is a quintessential New England experience all wrapped up into a charming seaside community! It's one of my favorite places, so when Sarah and Mikio expressed interest in having their session in Marblehead, well I did my little happy dance. (Yes I have one, don't judge;)).

To top if off Sarah had this great idea of heading to the Landing for part of the session to enjoy a few cocktails and oysters. While I'm not one to slurp down an oyster, it did make for some darling photos! I love when we can incorporate some sort of action or activity into an engagement session and this was the perfect fit for Sarah and Mikio! Plus you couldn't be the location on the water and having the deck all to ourselves!!

Sarah and Mikio will be getting married this New Years and are busily pulling together a fantastic celebration for their family and friends!! (Personally, I can't wait for the fooooood and fireworks!!:)) But on this afternoon they put the planning on hold, just for a few hours, to enjoy some time together. A fun loving couple, Sarah and Mikio love to goof around with each other. They are truly best friends and it was so lovely getting them in front of the camera to capture their relationship!! Nothing is more beautiful than two souls who have found their perfect partner in each other, a person they can walk through life together, to grow with together...I'm honored to be there to photograph the beginning of that journey.

Friends Weekend

weekend apple picking in new hampshire0020.JPG
A Weekend Away in New Hampshire

It has become a tradition (sort of) for our little "family". I call them family because I don't have any brother and sisters and to me they are family. I've known my dear friends Courtney and Liz since high school. We've seen our fair share of life together over these past years and I'm incredibly thankful for their sweet friendship. Made even sweeter at the fact that now married, our husbands are friends too!

Last year we were able to sneak three days away in New Hampshire with all three couples (and a baby;))! This year my dear friend Courtney is expecting a little one of her own and the trek from Brooklyn to New Hampshire was just a little bit too much with their busy schedules. So next year we plan!!

Not wanting to waste a perfectly good weekend, Liz and our hubbies decided to make use of a free and empty house on a lake, escpaing the city and everyday life, to head up North for a few days. Dave's parents are currently abroad (how glamourous!) jetsetting through Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Latvia. They were gracious enough to allow us use of their home and in return we made to feed the cats and eat all their candy;):)!

Ben & Liz along with Dave, Jonathan and I, did a whole lot of NOTHING and it was glorious. We made delicious breakfasts, had way too many laughs, spent a day apple picking and exploring New Hampshire, discovered the best soft serve on the planet and took naps on the living room couch. In short it was a beautiful weekend spent with people we love and I'm so thankful for the few days we had to spend relaxing!!weekend apple picking in new hampshire0001.JPGweekend apple picking in new hampshire0002.JPGweekend apple picking in new hampshire0004.JPGThis kid has an arm on him... no one is safe when he has something in his hands;)!weekend apple picking in new hampshire0005.JPGweekend apple picking in new hampshire0006.JPGweekend apple picking in new hampshire0007.JPGweekend apple picking in new hampshire0008.JPGweekend apple picking in new hampshire0009.JPGLove these two!weekend apple picking in new hampshire0010.JPGweekend apple picking in new hampshire0011.JPGThankful for auto settings on the camera so I could get a few pictures with these two:)!weekend apple picking in new hampshire0013.JPGweekend apple picking in new hampshire0014.JPGweekend apple picking in new hampshire0015.JPGweekend apple picking in new hampshire0016.JPGweekend apple picking in new hampshire0017.JPGweekend apple picking in new hampshire0018.JPGweekend apple picking in new hampshire0019.JPGweekend apple picking in new hampshire0020.JPGweekend apple picking in new hampshire0021.JPGAw, look at how cute!!weekend apple picking in new hampshire0022.JPGThis was our attempt at cute;):)!!weekend apple picking in new hampshire0023.JPG

Speaking at the Boston PUG

Speaking at the Boston PUG

If you've been hanging out on the blog for the last month or so you probably saw my announcement at the end of August about a speaking opportunity I was presented with earlier this year. Well, hard to believe but that day has come and gone! Last Tuesday I had the pleasure of speaking to our Boston PUG (a monthly group aimed at helping to equip and teach photographers) about a topic I'm incredibly passionate about : work/life balance.

To say I was nervous...well let's just say I was;). My stomach dropped even more when after I arrived the projector didn't want to cooperate. But thanks to our amazing Pastor for saving the day (the meeting was hosted at our church!), everything worked out! Phew! From there everything went smoothly!

As a Mom the idea of work /life balance has taken on new meaning for me over this past year and half. My desire is to share my experience with others so that they can be encouraged and equipped to make big changes in their businesses and lives. Balancing the responsibilities of a small business owner with the needs of our every day life can a challenge. I want to serve my clients well while focusing on the things that are deeply meaningful to me and my family. I don't always get it right but I'm here working on it every day. I've had to learn to seek the balance between the two and I've found great joy in the journey!

If you're a Boston area photographer, be sure to check out the PUG (there's a meeting every month!) It's an amazing way to meet new people, to learn new skills, expand your reach and find a community. The PUG has been an invaluable resource for me over these past years as I've grown my business. I've built friendships and learned from some of the best in the industry. AND if you're prone to be a shy person like me here's a little kick in the butt from me to you to step out of your comfort zone. You won't regret it!

Screen Shot 2014-09-24 at 9.50.49 AM.png

Screen Shot 2014-09-24 at 9.50.49 AM.png

Tuesday night was a first step for me. I hope that I can continue to share my heart, continue to encourage others and continue to equip business owners to chase after what really matters most! Cheers to the future! And thanks to Krista for the Instagram!

A South Boston Maternity Session

A South Boston Maternity Session

I've had the pleasure of knowing Rob and Rachel for almost three years now. From their engagement to wedding to now the upcoming arrival of their little one! It's an absolute joy to be invited into the lives of my couples, to walk that journey with them and to document those adventures through photographs. So when Rachel contacted me about a maternity session in their South Boston neighborhood, I couldn't have been more excited!

I met with Rob and Rachel at their home (they are renovating it from top to bottom!) to start their session. Rachel and Rob both love their street, their neighborhood and feel a deep connection to their little corner of the city. South Boston could not have been a more perfect place for their session. We spent an afternoon together exploring some of their favorite spots and of course stopping to take pictures along they way! We chatted about married life, pregnancy and all things baby. I'm so excited to watch as Rob and Rachel become parents, they make an amazing team!!

E&S -- Our favorite memory from the wedding day was the First Look. I'm so happy that ours happened in a secluded garden with just Deb and her team. We got to have a moment for just us which was great since the rest of the day you get pulled in so many different directions and you don't have any time to yourselves. The wedding day was at times, such a high pressure event, that it was a relief when we got to the First Look and knew that we got to do the rest of the day together!!D -- What has been the best thing that has happened to you as a couple since your wedding last year?

E&S -- We got the opportunity to move to London for Sarah's job and have decided to go for it! We move sometime in October and couldn't be more excited!D -- What have you learned about each other over this past year?

deborah zoe photography york golf and tennis club wedding york wedding new hampshire coast wedding_00581.JPG

deborah zoe photography york golf and tennis club wedding york wedding new hampshire coast wedding_00581.JPG

E&S -- We have learned that we are on the same page about more things than we thought. When it came time to decide if we were going to move to London, we expected it to be a tough decision but the first thought for both of us was "Let's go for it!". We've learned just how much we are both willing to change, and in some cases sacrifice, to make the dream of living in London happen. We have also gotten better at communicating over the past year and i'm sure will get better and better at it as our marriage goes on!D -- Traveled anywhere fun?

E&S -- We went on an epic honeymoon to Costa Rica and Aruba and had a blast. Everyone says it, but we wish we could go back on our honeymoon again so badly! In addition, Sarah travels a lot for work so we have been able to combine some of those trips with little getaways to places like Montreal and more recently London! Mostly, we have been holding off on big trips till the move, we can't wait to spend weekends and vacations exploring Europe!D -- Any tips you can offer newlyweds for their first year of marriage?

E&S -- As they say, "you just gotta do you" so I'm not sure we have any sage advice for other couples;). I guess its just important to know that the learning process keeps going after your married, even if you lived together before the wedding. You never know what opportunities life will give you, make sure you consider each one carefully and keep an open mind together:)!Thank you Sarah and Eddie for sharing a glimpse in your life this past year!! I'm so excited for all your jet setting travels come this October and the adventure you will share together living in London!! I'm equally jealous and excited for you;):)!! Happy Anniversary, here's to many more adventures to come!!

A Downtown Marblehead Engagement Session

marblehead engagement session _0001.JPG

Sometimes I meet clients for the very first time at their engagement session. Having only spoken on the phone with Lauren, I didn't even know what they looked like! This "not knowing" can sometimes lead to a bit of anxiety for me... Will we be a good fit? Will they be nice? Will we get along? These are the kind of thoughts that can run through your brain when meeting clients for the first time! But the minute I stepped out of my car in time for our sunset session in Marblehead, I was immediately put at ease.

From across the street, Lauren gave a cheery "Hi Deb!" and I was met with warm hugs and a kiss on the cheek from Chris. What did I have to worry about? Lauren and Chris are two of the warmest souls, putting anyone in their presence at ease. They exude confidence and a friendly spirit that is just infectious. Even as we wandered throughout the streets of Marblehead, often stopping in front of home of people we didn't know, these two immediately made fast friends. As an introvert myself, I love watching people like Chris and Lauren. You can't help but be energized by this couple and I'm going to guess that their friends count themselves lucky to be in the company of two such wonderful people.

With family in Marblehead Chris and Lauren were familiar with the area but not having spent a lot of time here they didn't exactly know their way around. I have deep family roots to this place and it was fun for me to show them around town! Plus with it proximity to the ocean, it's no wonder why it's one of my favorite places!

4 Things Your Photographer Wants You To Know

4 Things Your Photographer Wants You To Know

I have to say that I work with some of the most amazing people. And that's not just a throw away statement, it's true. Year after year I am continually amazed at the clients who come into my path. I have to pinch myself sometimes because I am beyond lucky to call these people clients and FRIENDS. Working with joyful, kind and all around wonderful people makes my job a rich and beautiful experience!!

For couples who have never worked with me before (or a wedding photographer in general for that matter!) sometimes there can be a sense of anxiety, there is an unknown element. Couples don't really know what to expect and what exactly it takes to craft a beautiful and natural image. That's where I come in and through our experience together I help guide my clients through what it will be like to work together. And so I thought I'd share the top four things that I tell all my clients to help them make the most of their experience in front of the camera! It's not just about pointing a camera at someone and making a picture. It's about a relationship and that's where I like to start. Make sense? Ok let's drive right in!

1. Trust Me.

I value our relationship together, as photographer and client. And in that relationship is a vulnerability that needs to be shared in order to capture you and your fiance as you truly are. I want you to feel safe and secure with me, knowing that I will take good care of you! Everything that happens in front of my camera is aimed at creating beautiful images, images where you look your best and where your true essence shines through. Trust me to take care of you and I promise you give you a great experience in return!

2. I want you to be lovey!

Your time in front of the camera should be special, memorable and meaningful. Being loving towards each other is a huge part of that! Maybe by nature you're not used to kissing your fiance in front of someone, especially someone you may have just met! Or maybe the fact of being in front of a camera makes you nervous and in return you are stiff and uncomfortable. But since you're trusting me and know that you're in a safe and inviting environment, you should feel free to be who you are with your fiance! Freedom to express yourself, to hug and kiss and play together. I want this to be a FUN time which means you can let down your guard and really savor this time together as couple!

3. I care about YOU.

If you haven't noticed a theme through this post, then let me declare, "I care about YOU!" You're more than just clients, truly. I care about you, I care about the process, I care about giving you a great experience. On the wedding day I am excited to be there to witness as you read your vows, as you share your First Kiss, as you are roasted by your Bridal Party. It is an honor to be a part of something so intimate and special. I don't want to be seen as just another vendor showing up on your wedding day. I care deeply about each couple I have the privilege to work with and my hope is that your images and experience demonstrates that every way!

4. I need TIME.

In order to create beautiful images, it takes time. Sometimes it takes a few moments for you find your groove, to receive direction, to be posed. It's a delicate process that is better served with time and space to breathe. Nothing will make you more stiff and uncomfortable in front of the camera, than if you feel rushed, hurried or stress. No longer do you feel safe or at ease. Time gives us the flexibility to create a calm and inviting atmosphere and gives you the opportunity to let down your guard and feel comfortable. Images are not just "snapped away", they are carefully crafted!! That takes time and patience. Give your photographer the time they need to give you a great experience, to make sure you are taken care of and to ensure you'll walk away from your engagement session and wedding with beautiful images that are entirely YOU!

If you're a DZP client, then you know all these things;) You're already a master at posing and relaxing in front of the camera. If you're in the process of looking for your photographer or you just hired one but haven't had a chance to be in front of the camera, try to keep these things in mind. I guarantee that if you trust your photographer to take good care of you, if you're affectionate and loving toward your fiance and if you give your photographer the space and time to create, you'll walk away from your engagement session and wedding with images that you will cherish for the rest of your life!

A Boston College Engagement Session

boston college engagement session_0018.JPG

Boston College runs in their blood. Ok, maybe not literally but it certainly is a family affair. Both of Jayme and Cory's families attended the famous Boston school, so when it came time to pick their own college of choice, they both knew exactly where they wanted to go. During their freshman year at BC Cory and Jayme met, spending the next four years getting to know one another and ultimately falling in love. Their's is a story of two college sweethearts and having fallen in love with MY husband during college, well I think it's all just incredibly sweet:)

When it came time to choose the location for their engagement session, there really wasn't a question. Boston College just had to be the background to their session, a place that makes up such an incredible part in their history together. So on a hot and humid morning, I met Jayme and Cory on campus for a sunrise session! The campus was so incredibly quiet and there was such a beauty to this place as the sun softly made it's debut. Having never been to BC before, I didn't realize just how beautiful this place is. Jayme and Cory were my tour guides and happily recalled many fun memories they made together on this campus. It was fun to relive those moments with them while creating new memories during their session!

I think I might be slightly obsessed with sunrise sessions, I mean you just can't beat the gorgeous light as you'll see below! Jayme and Cory, thank you so much for your warmth and big smiles (first thing in the morning!) and showing me around your beloved campus! I can't wait to celebrate with you next June!

Kristopher & Jacqueline Married

new hampshire wedding photographer concord _0022.JPG
A New Hampshire Wedding

The weather that day felt very similar to my own wedding. It was HOT and MUGGY and there were threats of raging storms all throughout the day. One minute it would be sunny, the next the skies would be dark. But despite whatever Mother Nature decided to throw their way, Jacqueline and Kristopher had the wedding of the dreams, surrounded by the people they loved the most.

Having been together for several years, the wedding came as no surprise to their family and friends, who always knew that these two would end up spending the rest of their lives together. Each moment throughout the day was grounded in this history and each person present played an important role in their relationship together. Jacqueline and Kristopher couldn't imagine sharing their day without these important people who mean so much.

The best moment of the day came when Kris saw his Bride for the First Look. Both had tears in their eyes, taking in the moment and savoring what the day meant to them. It was beautiful and I am entirely grateful to have been there to document such a sweet time! The rest of the day was a blur of teal (Jacqueline's color theme!) and a flurry of activity as their Bridal Party surrounded them with happiness and joy. Even their dog Katie was included in all the fun!! (See adorable puppy pictures below;))!

How A Baby Changed The Way I View Weddings

fairmontbatterywharfwedding_0010.JPG

How A Baby Changed The Way I View Weddings

Before having a baby I was a wedding photographer and had been for several years. I had been to my fair share of weddings as a guests and as a professional providing services to the Bride and Groom. I had seen a lot when it came to weddings. And as a someone who had been married for several years (at that point) my connection to that place in life was feeling more and more distant.

Then one day I had a baby. And all of that changed. Now, as I move throughout a wedding day I am overcome, not by the big and obvious moments, but the little, quiet, in between moments. I imagine what it will be like to dance with my son on his wedding day. I watch as Moms are led out onto the dance floor by their grown sons and I know exactly what they are feeling. I am completely connected to the symbolism behind that moment because as a Mom, I get it. I'm honored to be there to capture those moments no for photography's sake, but because I'm creating something tangible that represents something so dear.

Being a parent has changed the way that I view weddings, it's changed the way that I document the day. I see much more clearly the deep family relationships that are present on a wedding day. I connect with those moments that seem so little but are really so big. I can imagine no greater joy in this world than standing by your child as they marry the one that they love. And I KNOW, the joy that it is to marry your best friend, to dream about what the future holds for you together. My hope is that I honor those connections in each image I capture. Being a parent affects everything that I do. That title has radically changed my world, for the better. I'm entirely grateful for the lessons Jonathan teaches me every day and how in turn, that allows me to be a better Mom, Wife, Friend and of course, photographer.

And you don't have to be a parent to understand the gravity of a wedding day. As photographers, as we move about life, mature, change, we'll connect in different ways to a wedding day. The key is understanding what we connect too and how that directly impacts the way that we document the day. What do you connect with on a wedding day? Why do you love photographing weddings? If you can answer this question you'll not only create beautiful images, but in your work, your clients, your photography, you'll begin to experience joy, beauty and love in everything that you do. Sounds cliche, but believe me, it's true..

A Downtown Newburyport Family Session

A Downtown Newburyport Family Session

I've known Aubrey for several years now, hard to believe I'm typing that because it feels like yesterday we became friends!! We've grown our businesses at the same time and I've gained much wisdom from this dear friend! Most recently being how to balance Motherhood and Business! I've so appreciated her candor and willingness to share about how she juggles it all, and she's been a great encouragement to me!

As a photographer herself, Aubrey understands just how important photography is and so each year she schedules a portrait session for her family. One of my favorite things about this girl, is how generous she is. She'll often ask industry friends to photograph her family, as a way to support her friends and get beautiful images of the people she loves, a win win! (Maybe you remember her portrait session?) This year she asked me if I'd spend an afternoon with her, her husband Matt and their darling boy, Max. And well, I just couldn't resist!

The last time I saw Max as at his one year session two years ago! My how much has changed!! Max is SO big, so chatty and just an all around awesome kid. I love how much Matt and Aubrey love him and it's clear just how much joy he brings into their lives. And while family sessions are not something I do on a regular basis, seeing the love a couple shares with each other and for their little ones, well it's something that just makes my heart swell!

We decided to make our way to downtown Newburyport instead and spent a great afternoon exploring and catching up!! Aubrey, Matt and Max, thank you so much for asking met to document your family unit. It's been a joy to photograph you over the years and I'm so grateful for your friendship. I hope you enjoy the images!!

Our Home

GA8A5517.jpg
One Year House-versary!!

Wholly molly, has it really been OVER one whole year since we closed and moved into our home?! It really feels like yesterday we were packing up our cherished first home, getting ready to move into a dream home. I still can't believe how it all came together (that's a blog post in of itself!) and that we survived being homeless for a week, with four month old and all. It was a crazy time as a family but look at us now, happily settling into this wonderful place!

I think what I love most about our home is that it FEELS like home. If given the chance to go out or stay at home we'll most likely take the stay at home option. I never really thought we'd become the home body type, but we cherish the time we spend together as a family here. My favorite place is our front porch. We recently purchased two adirondack chairs that now sit out front. Nothing is better than sharing a glass of wine with my hubby after the babe has gone to bed, recapping our days while sitting in these chairs. We've made many happy memories here, I cannot wait to create many more together.

I REALLY wanted to do a recap post of all the amazing nooks and crannies that we have decorated over this past year. But really the biggest thing that we have done to date was paint. With a smaller budget and minimal time to decorate we definitely don't have much to share...yet! Regardless, I'm proud of all we have accomplished in our home so far and it makes me REALLY excited for some projects we're throwing around for the future!!

My hope and dream for this house is that it will be a welcoming place. More than just a building, we hope it's' a place where people feel at ease, relaxed and cherished. My heart is to be a good host and while I'm not always the best at it, this house has allowed me to stretch my welcoming muscles and we've been blessed to see many faces enter through our front door! We hope many more people will be hosted here in the years to come!!

And because I know a blog post really isn't anything without pictures, here are a few of our house one year later. We need your help though, what project should be tackle next? Any designing advice to share?! We could use all the help we can get!! We're thinking of adding board and batten...what do you think?:) I'd love any advice that helps make this house feel more like a farm house:):)!!

Speaking at the Boston PUG

speaking at the boston PUG.jpg

The art of balance. I've been learning a lot about what it means to have a healthy work life balance this past year as I've made the transition from business owner to now business owner and Mom. Sometimes I get it right and sometimes I have to take a step back. It's not always easy but it is always WORTH the effort. I count myself incredibly blessed to have a career that lets me chase after my passion of photography while having a business that serves my clients AND my family well. So it comes as no surprise that I'm passionate about encouraging and equipping others to chase after their dreams while living healthy and joy filled lives! And I'm incredibly excited to write that I'll be sharing my heart and passion of work life balance with the Boston PUG on September 16!!

For me, building this business isn't just about a business, it's so much more!! But how do you get beyond every day tasks to building a life that fills your cup? (Systems, organization and a heaping amount of grace!) During our time together I'll be sharing about the way that I've managed my business and how that has allowed me to build a family and serve them well (READ: love, cherish, support and be there for them in a tangible way). My hope is that you'll leave our time together equipped and inspired to make changes in your daily business life, changes that will give you the freedom to build a business that serves your life!

And the best part? It's free! You don't even have to be a photographer to attend! The PUG is open to all, with food and refreshments to be served before hand. It's a great opportunity to mix and mingle with fellow industry peers while getting in some free education! In fact, the PUG is where I met some of my first photographer friends when I entered the wedding photography world several years ago. Thinking back to my very first PUG, I was shy, scared and completely unsure. Now, five years later, here I am presenting on something I am incredibly passionate about! Crazy!

If your work life balance is something you're struggling with I'd love to see there!! My hope is that you'll leave our time refreshed and ready to systemize your business!! You can RSVP here!!

If you have any questions about what a healthy work life balance looks like OR want to know how to systemize a certain area of your business leave a comment below!! There are lots of things I'm going to chat about but I'd love to hear from you, what do YOU want to know about the art of balance?!

Phew. I can't believe I just put that out there. September 16th, be there!!

Coaching Session with Katelyn James

Waaayy back in spring, maybe?!, my inbox sent out it's familiar, ding you have a new message. I opened the inbox to find a newsletter from friend and fellow photographer Katelyn James. Now this isn't anything new, she sends one out about every month, but this time my heart jumped a little. This time there was an opportunity to sign up for a coaching session, one that I could attend. My mouse hovered over the button waiting to click. I practically jumped when it went through.

Katelyn is an industry leader, across the board, she's revered and loved by MANY people in this crazy wedding world. She's also an incredibly smart and savvy business woman who is passionate about helping others grow their businesses and succeed as wedding photographers. In an industry that can seem at times to pull people down, stir up drama and fueled by exclusivity and harshness, Katelyn is a breath of fresh air, leading the charge to change the way industry works. It's something I can whole heartedly get behind, it's part of the reason why I want to learn from her!

I've known Katelyn since 2010? I had discovered her blog and when I made my first trip to WPPI we bumped into each other. We've stayed in touch ever since, she even flew up to Boston a few years ago to photograph our own anniversary session! She's been a mentor of mine and a friend for the past four or so years and I've been extremely grateful for how she's poured into my business since!

Fast forward to this spring when my Katelyn's newsletter entered my inbox. I don't know why, but I knew that now was the time to sign up for a coaching session. I had not attended an industry workshop in years and as someone who loves to learn I couldn't pass up the opportunity to do just that from one of the best! Plus Katelyn is someone I know and trust which made the opportunity even more appealing. It was a win win combination. I clicked submit and suddenly found myself heading down to Virginia in August.

If you've been following along on the blog you know that we decided to make this trip a week long family vacation. I'm so thankful the hubby and babe could join! Jonathan made fast friends with Katelyn's hubby Michael and I so loved getting to spend time with them. It truly makes my heart happy to count these two not only as industry peers but friends too!!

So what did we talk about?! Well, everything!! I laid it all out on the table, where I am and where I want to go in my business. Katelyn walked me through some of these areas and inspired me to go for it! I'm so grateful for her enthusiasm because we all know what it can be like to sit behind a computer every day. And how hard it can be to find the courage to chase after your dreams. It's a wonderful feeling knowing that you have someone in your corner rooting you on!

Hopefully in the coming months and year I'll be sharing a bit more of what's on my heart, my hope being that you'll be inspired, encouraged and equipped!! AND if you're considering a Coaching Session with Katelyn, just do it. It will revolutionize your business and give you the boost you so desperately need. Every session will look a little different, as each person has their own sets of goals and dreams, but for a general "what to expect" : know that you'll be well taken care of, welcomed and celebrated. You'll most likely get to meet Bokeh (their adorable dog) and spend several hours being poured into. As a business owner, we don't get many opportunities like this and it's one you're going to want to grab a hold of!

Part of the Coaching experience is having the chance to be photographed by Katelyn. Great for me as I have been in desperate need of a new headshot! (My last was when I was six months pregnant!!) Here are a few of my faves!!I couldn't be more grateful for our time in Virginia, I'm beyond excited for what the future holds! Thank you Katelyn for welcoming us into your home, for being so gracious with Jonathan and for pouring into my business!! What an amazing thing you are giving to other photographers!!

How To Get Work Done When The Baby Won't Nap

Work Schedules for the Mom Photographer.jpg

This week Jonathan has been without child care. Actually for almost the entire month of August we've been without child care. First my best friend was visiting, then we were traveling and now this last week in August daycare is closed as she is on vacation. Having gone from no child care, to day care at 9 months, and now back to a month of being at home, I have to say it's been a strange transition. I've actually really enjoyed my time with Jonathan (did I mention he's the world's BEST kid!) and I think I know I will miss him when daycare begins again in September.

But with Jonathan being home it means that my usual workday schedule has gone out the window. Once again I have found myself relegated to working when if he naps. When Jonathan was a baby bay he REFUSED to nap. Didn't he know I had work to get done?! It was incredibly hard on this OCD Mom who was used to rules, schedules and control. Before I had Jonathan I would map out my day down to the HOUR. I knew exactly what was coming next and this allowed me to get projects done. But with a new baby I found this just didn't work anymore. I spent many days crying, frustrated that I couldn't figure this thing out. How was I ever going to get anything done?

Now, that's all changed as we have help. And come September my schedule will change again from relying on naps to relying on the help of daycare and babysitters. But as a new mom or mom with out daycare how do you get things done when your baby/baby/toddler/annoying dog just won't nap?!

There are three things that I think I needed to work through in order to survive, get work done and still enjoy every moment with my baby:

1. I had to rethink the work day.

2. I had to work in between.

3. I had to have grace.

Ok so what do I mean by all of that? First I had to rethink the work day. Like I mentioned before I was used to having complete control over how my work day (and personal life) looked! Having a baby (especially one who didn't like to nap) meant that I had to rethink what my work day looked like. For me that meant working at night after the hubby came home. Was it ideal? No. But I knew that for our family it was necessary to continue to grow my business while raising a child. I would wake up early and work after Jonathan went to bed. I made sure that every moment of those working hours were productive and time well spent. My work day probably looks a lot different than other working professionals (I have to schedule Skype calls during nap times or shoots during daycare hours) but as a Mom this is what works for our family, and as a business owner THIS is how I get work done!!

Which brings me to working in the in between. During those months of parenthood when Jonathan just wouldn't nap, it didn't mean that my work stopped. It meant I had to get creative in order to find time to get things done. Throughout the day, if I could sneak it in, I would work in the in between. If Jonathan had a moment of down time (few and far between for this busy boy!) I'd answer an email, I'd pre-blog a post, I'd work on an edit, or begin whatever task was on my plate. I made use of whatever time I was given to slowly chip away at my to-do list. And while I might not have accomplished tasks as fast as I'd like, slowly but surely I'd start to see items checked off this list. Jonathan eating his lunch meant I could answer an email. Play time out on the deck (supervised of course!) meant I could start that blog post. Some quiet play time in the crib meant I could upload that submission. You get the idea!!

Finally GRACE with a capitol G -R-A-C-E. As someone who likes to check off their to do list like a badge of honor, not being able to accomplish a magnitude of tasks throughout a day was a hard pill for me to swallow. But I quickly came to realize that it just couldn't work like that, for me anyways. I had to have grace. Grace that it was OK to only accomplish a few tasks on my to do list a day. That in of itself was an accomplishment!! I also had to learn how to have grace for my son. It was incredibly difficult to walk through those moments when he didn't want to nap, even though those were the moments I needed him to nap the most. A lot of prayer happened in these moments of frustration and doubt and I'm happy to say that we made it through:)

I'm home alone with Jonathan today. He decided to nap but didn't want to nap for as long as I needed him to. So that means I'm putting the to do list away, I'm closing the computer and I'm hanging out with him. I'll work a little when the hubby gets home and after Jonathan goes to bed. I'll rethink the day, work in the in between and have grace for all that will (or will not) be accomplished today.

It's a balancing act for sure but I'm finding that the longer I'm a Mom the more I love this. It's never a smooth and predictable road but I sure do love being a Mom and a photographer. I love learning the balance between the two and I love teaching my son that caring for a family while pursuing a passion are two incredibly important things. Modeling that for him will be my life's goal.
