Why Should You Invest In An Album?

I recently received a gorgeous heirloom album for a portrait client. It beautifully represented their journey from a couple to a family with photos of their maternity session and their newborn session all thoughtfully curated into a gorgeous linen bound album.

It got me thinking about the power of your images and the meaning that they hold, especially when presented in an album. Let’s dive into some of the many reasons why investing in an heirloom album is an investment in the preservation of your most treasured memories.

First, an album is great excuse to get your digital images off of a computer or device and into a tangible heirloom that you can physically hold. Being able to experience your images rather than view them as pixels on a screen brings a new meaning to those images in the form of a tangible experience. These images are a visual representation of your most treasured memories and deserve to be preserved and shared.

Second, digital is not forever. As digital mediums and the way we store those digital files change, new challenges arise. It costs more and more money to store those digital files and then convert them into modern usage. Remember those home made VHS videos of your childhood? Obsolete. CDs or discs? Now most computers don’t even have a disc player. Think of your printed heirloom as the main way of preserving and storing your memories. Rely on digital only as your backup.

Third, there are risks with relying on only digital preservation of your image as well. I learned this lesson the hard way when my phone suddenly died around my son’s fourth month of life. The phone was so corrupted that no images could be taken off the hard drive. I had yet to backup those images and non had been printed. All those precious memories of my son’s first few months of life were lost forever. I made a commitment from them on to not only back up my images but to create a yearly album for our family.

Today as my kids thumb through the pages of our family albums from the last seven years their eyes light up, they ask questions. They revel in seeing their own images printed in an album and those of the people they love. It’s a tangible and emotional experience to see images in print, especially when they represent such a deep and emotional connection.
